Entrepreneurial Politicians? -a case study of how local politicians acts in order to promote local development
Local and regional development is and has been a highly debated area within researchers, politicians and practitioners. The core question has been what promotes local and regional development?
The deep transformations undergone by Western countries after the economic crisis have positioned the local economic development in the centre of the productive restructuring verified in many territories, which appears as a possible way of progress for some rural areas with an endogenous potential.
The paper tries to analyze the following research question: “How does the formation of social capital among activists of community-based cooperatives effect local development?”
Given tight budget constraints and a backlog in infrastructure investments, small municipalities are seeking new forms of providing public services (e.g. eldercare) which build on civic participation. In contrast to outsourcing these services in the form of Public-Private-Partnerships, cooperative Public-Citizen-Partnerships support civic democracy on a local level.
