From June 2003 to June 2008 we researched eight major bioindustry companies of natural products in Manaus (Amazonas – Brazil), using the neoschumpeterian methodology. Starting with Amazonian indigenous knowledge and using local and natural raw materials, these companies make innovations and reach for sustainability. Products like natural energetics, anti-infections, anti-inflammatories, etc are made on a natural basis by local and genuinely Amazonian companies. According to our research, businesses like these became an alternative in the Amazon because they combine environmental preservation, social justice, and economic viability. Thus, we concluded that it is possible to develop sustainable businesses in the Amazon and avoid devastation. But on the other hand, Amazonian entrepreneurs encounter many adversities from government overregulation against micro enterprises and social movements. Heavy taxes, too much bureaucracy, and social impediments work against new sustainable businesses in the Amazon.
